Clarksville Veterans Quilt (2004) was a public art initiative developed the Clarksville – Montgomery County Public Library and the Goldsmith Press. The project sought to honor hometown veterans. Ft. Campbell, the second largest military base in the United States, is situated in Clarksville Tennessee. The population of Clarksville is roughly 150,000 and 45,000 of its inhabitants are paid Army employees. A military presence continues to underpin the economy and social fabric of the region. On Veterans’ Day 2004, members of the Clarksville community were invited to the public library to typeset and print the names of friends and family members who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. A 12-foot by 9-foot quilt containing the names of 200 veterans was the final result of our Veterans’ Day efforts. The ‘Clarksville Veterans’ Quilt’ was funded by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.
